Okatse Canyon Tour Highlights
We usually begin our Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour with a visit to Okatse Canyon. The main highlight of the canyon is the impressive hanging bridges suspended high above the gorge, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
The distance between the visitor center and the hanging bridges is approximately 2.5 km. There are two options to reach the bridges:
Option 1 – Walking:
It takes about 40 minutes to walk to the bridges. Exploring the bridge area takes around 1 hour, and the return walk takes another hour. In total, sightseeing by walking may take approximately 2.5 hours.
Option 2 – Transfer by vehicle:
You can take a car to reach the bridges more comfortably, saving approximately 1–1.5 hours. It is also possible to walk downhill to the bridges and use the vehicle for the return trip.
Important:
Due to safety regulations, children under 120 cm are not allowed to enter Okatse Canyon. During heavy rain, the canyon may be closed to visitors.
Martvili Canyon Tour Highlights
Another highlight of our Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour is Martvili Canyon. The 700-meter hiking trail begins at the visitor center and follows the historic walkway once used by the Dadiani family, former rulers of the region.
Along the route, you will see two bridges, three panoramic viewing platforms, waterfalls, and a limestone staircase with approximately 30 steps. The scenery here is lush, green, and truly unforgettable.
Ticket Options at Martvili Canyon
There are three ticket options available:
Main Walking Ticket – 20 GEL
Includes access to the waterfalls and riverside walking trail. The walk takes approximately 40–50 minutes.
Optional Boat Ride – 15 GEL
A peaceful 20-minute boat ride along the canyon river. Each boat holds up to 6 people and is operated by an instructor. In calm conditions, you may assist with light paddling.
Optional Zipline – 50 GEL
A zipline experience above the canyon for an added adrenaline boost.
Important:
During heavy rain, the river level may rise and boat rides are temporarily unavailable for safety reasons.
Prometheus Cave Tour Experience
Following our itinerary for the Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour from Kutaisi, we continue to Prometheus Cave — one of the most impressive natural attractions in Georgia.
Prometheus Cave operates with its own professional guides. Departure times vary depending on the season. During the high season (April–October), tours depart approximately every 15–20 minutes. In the low season, departures are usually every 40–50 minutes, so waiting times may vary.
There are two ticket options available:
Main Walking Tour – approximately 1 hour
A guided underground walk through spectacular halls filled with stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers and dramatic lighting.
Optional Boat Ride – approximately 15 minutes
A short boat journey on the underground lake (available depending on water level and weather conditions). After heavy rain, boat rides may be temporarily unavailable for safety reasons.
Before each tour begins, an announcement is made via loudspeaker, and a guide provides a short introduction at the pavilion. Then your one-hour mystical journey through the cave begins.
Abandoned Sanatoriums of Tskaltubo
Later in the afternoon, we arrive in the spa town of Tskaltubo — the final stop of our Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour from Kutaisi.
During the Soviet era, Tskaltubo was one of the most prestigious health resorts in the USSR. Thousands of people dreamed of receiving a pass to this famous spa destination. However, only high-ranking officials, members of the political elite, and distinguished workers were granted this privilege.
Tskaltubo was designed in three concentric rings:
First ring – Mineral baths and springs
There are 12 thermal bath buildings, each numbered and built around the natural mineral water sources.
Second ring – Sanatoriums and grand hotels
Around 25 large sanatorium complexes were constructed to accommodate visitors seeking treatment and relaxation.
Third ring – Residential area
The surrounding settlement was developed to support the resort, with a population of several thousand residents.
During our visit, we explore the abandoned Sanatorium Medea and its surroundings, discovering the unique architecture and atmosphere of this once-glorious Soviet spa town.
