Okatse Canyon tour
Generally we start our Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour with Okatse. The main highlight of the Canyon are the Hanged bridges looking over the gorge. Must be remembered, that the distance between Visitor center and hanged bridges are about 2.5 km. Therefore we have 2 options to reach the bridges; The first – by walking, specifically about 40 minutes to reach the bridges. Walking the Bridge itself takes about 1 hour, plus 1 hour for the way back. Consequently, you may need about 2.5 hours, in total, for the sightseeing. The second option, obviously to have a the car and reach bridges with much less effort. As a result 1 – 1.5 hours saved with this option. It is also possible to walk your way to the bridges (mainly walking downwards) and take the car on the way back.
IMPORTANT:Because of safety regulations, kids under 120 cm could not enter Okatse . At the time of rain, Okatse Canyon is closed for visitors.
Martvili Canyon tour
Another stop for our Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour is the visitor Centre of Martvili Canyon. 700 meters hiking trail starts from the visitors’ centre and passes through Dadiani’s ( Local ruler) historic walkway. There are 2 bridges, 3 viewing platforms, and 30-step of an old staircase that is built from limestone.
There are 3 ticket options:
- Main ticket for walking along the waterfalls down the river. costs 17 gel. 40-50 minutes to walk;
- Optional ticket for Boating up the river. costs – 15 gel. it takes about 20 minutes. There are 6 people on the boat and an instructor. you may need to paddle though, as the river is very peaceful ;
- Optional ticket for zipline. costs 50 gel. Zipline length —— meters;
IMPORTANT: at the time of rain, the river level raises and boating is not available.
Prometheus Cave tour
Following our itinerary for Okatse Canyon, Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave tour, we stop at Prometheus Cave. Prometheus Cave has its own guided tours. Must be remembered, that departure time varies from season to season. Specifically, in high season (April-October) every 15-20 minutes, in a low season 40-50 minutes. So, you may need to plan accordingly.
Generally, there are 2 kinds of tickets available; main ticket for a walking tour – takes 1 hour, and optional ticket for a boat ride – takes 15 minutes. In fact, boats are not available after a rain as the water level rises. They announce about the start of the tour via loudspeakers . By the time a guide waits for visitors in the pavilion, to present a brief information about the cave. And a one hour mystical journey begins…
Abandoned Sanatoriums of Tskaltubo
Later, close to the evening, we arrive at City of Tskaltubo, the final step in our Okatse Canyon and Martvili Canyon tour schedule. Undoubtedly, Tskaltubo was a favorite destination for people living in the Soviet World. Thousands of them were dreaming to get the pass to this glorious Spa resort. Though, only the Leaders of the Soviet Party, the Political Elite and government members had earned the privilege.
Tskaltubo City is built on 3 rings.
- The first ring; baths or springs. There are 12 and numbered accordingly;
- The second ring; Sanatoriums or hotels surrounding the spring area. 25 of them;
- The third ring; City settlement . population about —- people;
We will explore Sanatorium Medea and its surroundings.
