The Story of Chiatura
Chiatura’s development began with the discovery of manganese deposits in the 19th century. In 1879, manganese mines started operating, attracting international investors and foreign capital.
By the end of the 19th century, manganese exports from Chiatura accounted for nearly 30% of global production. The city became famous for its extensive cable car system connecting the town center to mining settlements built on surrounding hills.

Katskhi Pillar – The Pillar of Life
On the way to Chiatura, we stop at the remarkable Katskhi Pillar — a 40-meter-high limestone monolith rising dramatically from the valley. A small church stands at its summit, visible from below. The pillar has long been venerated by locals as a sacred symbol of faith.
Mgvimevi Monastery
Another highlight of the tour is Mgvimevi Monastery, founded in the Middle Ages and carved into rock formations. Its most significant structure is a 13th-century two-nave basilica dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God.
